Chinese Year of The Horse, Wood Horse Year 1954

Chinese Year 2014 began on 31st. January and is the Year of the Horse and also of the element Wood. I can’t do a Labyrinth with 2014 squares or triangles in its Repeat Unit (see the Making Manifest your Birthyear Labyrinth post), but I can do one with 1954 squares, 1954 being the last Wood Horse year, when Lattice Labyrinths still lay hid in night. Serpentine Labyrinth (35,27) has two sets of identically shaped Supertiles aligned at right angles to each other, each of area 977 squares. One supertile from each set makes up the repeat unit.

I didn’t particularly like the first Labyrinth I produced, using the standard form of the algorithm and, yet again, finding a non-standard procedure which worked too time. It was worth it because, more by accident than design the solution I’ve arrived at has supertiles in the form of a capital H, though if you unravel the convoluted letter you find that H has one leg much longer, and the opposite arm, than the other, it exhibiting diagonal mirror symmetry about the centre of the cross-piece of the letter. I must look for a general method and rule for generating Capital H Serpentines. Here is this one, with an extra supertile flung out and coloured a sort of red so you can make out its shape more easily.

About davescarthin

After terminating academic and local government careers, long an independent bookseller/publisher at Scarthin Books, Cromford, Derbyshire, UK. An antiquarian bookseller in two senses, I now have more time to be an annuated independent post-doc, developing the long dormant topic of lattice labyrinth tessellations - both a mathematical recreation and a source of compelling practical tiling and textile designs. Presenting a paper and experiencing so many others at Bridges Seoul 2014 Mathart conference was a great treat, as were the spirited MathsJam Annual Conferences in November 2016 and 2017. I'm building up to a more academic journal paper and trying hard to find practical outlets in graphic design and landscape architecture. I submitted 8 ft square tiling designs to the Wirksworth Festival Art and Architecture Trail in 2016 and 2017. I love giving illustrated talks, tailored to the audience.
